Day 1

Chandigarh to Narkhanda, via Naina Tikker, Ochghat, Theog, 198 km: Hatu Peak excursion at end of day

The first day’s ride rises from the dusty piedmont plains of Punjab and up the Sivalik hill range of Himachal. We will use little-known backroads resplendent with pine and spruce to avoid the massive 4-laning project on the highway and bypass Shimla to arrive at Narkhanda, which is majestically located on a ridge with an awe-inspiring view of the snowy peaks of the Himalayan ranges.

Sunset ride to the nearby Hatu peak, which is nearly 2,000 feet higher than Narkhanda, and just 7 km away where the setting sun offers a spectacular sight with red, crimson and orange alternately tinging the clouds and the snow.

Day 2

Narkhanda to Jibhi, via Jalori Pass, 128 km. Fishing for trout, short hikes, overnight camp

On day 2, we ride down from Narkhanda on sweeping curves to Sainj, cross the Sutlej to get on NH305 that joins the old NH22 (new NH5)  and old NH21 (new NH 5), the fabled roads of yore. A beautiful single-track road ascends swiftly through the deodar forests before bursting out into the meadows of Jalori Pass, the highest point of the ride at 10,500 ft.

Two hiking trails branch off in opposite directions from the top of the pass–one goes towards serene Seroyul Lake and the other towards the ruins of the ancient Raghupur Fort. The stunning and steeply inclined eight-kilometre drive from Jalori Pass to Jibhi, winding through treacherous twists, is an adventure in itself. The gurgling streams of the Jibhi and Tirthan streams are famous for trout fishing where we will cast for our dinner. Overnight at Jibhi camp in comfortable Swiss cottage tents.

Day 3

Jibhi to Billing via Bajaura, Kataula, Jhatingri, Billing, 169 km; paragliding

On the 3rd day, we cross the Beas river and head north on the NH21 till Bajaura. A small non-descript road will take us high into the Dhauladar mountains on hard-packed dirt as well as well-maintained tarmac. The Uhl river, famed for its trout fishing will keep us company for while at 6000 ft before we drop down to the highway and swoop through terraced fields of golden wheat to the twin hamlets of Bir and Billing that are joined at the hip through the world-class paragliding geography. We will hook up with a reputed paragliding school for a tandem flight that will soar high above the Dhauladar mountains on gentle thermal. The Tandem flights use a wing large enough to hold two people, a pilot and passenger. Each person has their own harness, which are attached together, with the passenger in front, and the pilot right behind. This is a great way to experience what it is like to fly an un-powered craft.
